The Impact of BAN on Azhar

Masood Azhar is the founder and the leader of the Pakistani based terror organization Jaish-e-Mohammed, which is mainly active in the Pakistani-administered portion of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. He was listed as an international terrorist by the United Nations Security Council.

The United Nations Security Council is primarily responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security. The 1267 committee was adopted in 15th October 1999 which is responsible for imposing sanctions and carry out background checks of various terror organizations. After several failed attempts by the UN security council to list him as a global terrorist due to the veto voting by China which relentlessly quashed it for its own vested interests in the region - particularly to barter security of the controversial China-Pakistan economic corridor(CPEC).

The hard press persuasion by the Indian government and the pressure mounted by the global leaders is what made China change its mind on its Azhar's technical hold in the UN committee. This move saw a major diplomatic win for the Indian government to list him as a global terrorist. The sanctions imposed on him include 'Travel Ban’, ‘Assets Freeze' and 'Arms Embargo’. The government of Pakistan is duty bound to impose these sanctions on him and failing to do so will result in global embarrassment and the risk of including themselves in the UN blacklisted countries. Masood Azhar already carries a $10 million bounty on his head given by the US armed forces.

Although the sanctions have been imposed there seems to be no surge in cross border terrorism. Will the sanctions have a major impact on the functioning of JEM and Masood Azhar or will the effect of sanctions wade off...this is a question which only time will answer.
